Scouting

         What is scouting?

Purpose

The purpose of the Boy Scouts of America — incorporated on February 8, 1910, and chartered by Congress in 1916 — is to provide an educational program for boys and young adults to build character, to train in the responsibilities of participating citizenship, and to develop personal fitness.

Chartered Organizations

Community-based organizations receive national charters to use the Scouting program as a part of their own youth work. These groups, which have goals compatible with those of the BSA, include religious, educational, civic, fraternal, business, and labor organizations; governmental bodies; corporations; professional associations; and citizen's groups.

Program

Tiger Cubs

A year-round family- and home-centered program that encourages the ethical decision-making skills for first-grade (or 7-year-old) boys. These boys participate in the program with their adult partners. The program emphasizes shared leadership, learning about the community, and family understanding.

Cub Scouts

The Cub Scout program is for boys in the 2nd through the 5th grade. Boys that join the Cub Scout program have fun learning about many things like, arts and crafts, citizenship, sports and academics, physical fitness, nature and conservation to name a few.

Boy Scouts

A program for boys 11 through 17 designed to achieve the aims of Scouting through a vigorous outdoor program and peer group leadership with the counsel of an adult Scoutmaster. (Boys also may become Boy Scouts if they have earned the Cub Scouting Arrow of Light Award or have completed the fifth grade.)

Venture Scouts

Venturing is a new program designed to build character in older young men and women. Open to boys and girls ages 14-20, this high adventure program offers many new opportunities for both youth and leaders. The Venturing program is as different from Boy Scouts as Boy Scouts is compared to Cub Scouts. Though the principles remain the same, the level of intensity increases.
Many units to challenge older boys, and current Eagle Scouts are using Venturing Crews. This has enabled units to keep youth that have felt unchallenged by the requirements of Boy Scouts to remain in a program that builds leadership skills and character as they participate in such activities as scuba, rock climbing, and spelunking. The Venture program can be adapted to the needs of the chartering organization.
